The Android Market has thousands of applications designed to increase efficiency and productivity in many different areas. It was my goal to find the best free apps available on the market that were geared towards musicians. I have found the following apps to be incredibly useful in the songwriting process, for rehearsal and for reference purposes.
gStrings – This is a chromatic tuner application that allows you tune any instrument and is just as accurate as any tuner that you will find in a music shop. Every musician knows how important it is for an instrument to be in tune. With gStrings, you will never be without a reliable tuner. The user interface is simple and very easy to use. You can omptimize the frequency range and adjust microphone sensitivity for the instrument you are tuning. This app great to have for daily use, unexpected party requests, or to discover the pitch that your bathroom fan emits.
Guitar : Solo Lite – This is a virtual guitar application with a huge chord library. It shows a diagram of each chord and lets you hear the chord being strummed. You can also choose from premade layouts or create your own groups of chords to be included on the main page of the virtual guitar. Strings can be either strummed or individually plucked. This app lets you try out new chord progressions at any time, even when you are nowhere near a real instrument. It can also give your fingers a break from pressing down on steel strings when you are trying to think of new ideas.
Rehearsal Assistant – This is a simple, easy to use recording application that has the option of uncompressed WAV recording. A nice feature of this app is the ability to e-mail recordings. It works well for recording quick song ideas and for recording practice sessions to listen to later. Each track is saved with a time stamp and can be given a title. Tracks can also be grouped into individual projects for better organization.
